you can have your vet do it, if you do not want to

Better start while their young and keep it up. My chihuahua turns into satan when I try t0 cut his. It’s best t0 buy a pair 0f clippers that has the guard on it so you want over cut and make them bleed.

If the nails are clear and you can see the vein, you want t0 clip a little below the vein. If the nails are dark, you want t0 clip a little at a time and when you begin t0 see a dark color in the nail you want t0 stop. If you happen t0 clip the vein, baking soda will stop the bleeding. If your puppy fusses when you try t0 clip its nails, make an appt. with your vet t0 have them clipped.

You have 3 options: do it yourself, have it done by a groomer or ask your vet t0 do it when your puppy goes in for his/her next medical appointment. Most vets will clip nails for no charge if the dog is there for another reason (i.e. getting a shot). A groomer will charge you.
If you decide t0 do it yourself, purchase dog nail clippers from any pet store. Only clip the very tip 0f the nail since dogs have veins that run through their nails and you can cause pain and bleeding. If you are doing it yourself, it is best t0 have someone holding the dog so you can concentrate strictly on cutting the nails. Some dogs are more willing t0 stay still than others. Some dogs are very sensitive t0 having their feet touched and will make it very difficult for you. Others will be OK provided you don’t cut too far and cause pain.

You want t0 get your pup use t0 it and, t0 hopefully not fight you. To start, clip a nail and give the pup the tiniest 0f treat, clip another nail, another tiny treat. Do this until done. If you trim the nails every two-three weeks and do it this way for the first few times, it will get easier with the pup. As the pup comes t0 at least cope with the nail trimming, you can give a treat after finishing a foot, working t0 the time you just give a treat after all 4 feet are finished. If you should get the ‘quick’ you can stop the bleeding with regular flour or even bar soap. Anything that will semi-block the blood flow.
To do the nails, you will notice a little curve or ‘hook’ at the end 0f the nail; this is what you will clip off. Check it out here:

To save you much pain and suffering in the future, take the time t0 slowly introduce the puppy t0 having her nails cut. Wait until she is tired, then start t0 rub and manipulate a paw. Then stop and give her a treat. Don’t cut a nail yet, just get her used t0 having her paws handled. Give her lots 0f treats and tell her what a good girl she is when she lets you touch her paws. Once she is comfortable with you touching her paws, go a head and clip ONE nail. stop and give her a treat. If she took it well, then wait a while and then clip another nail. If she didn’t take it well, go back t0 just rubbing the paws. For my beagle, I did 1 nail a day until he didn’t try t0 fight me. After he would consitently let me trim 1 nail, I moved t0 two. Eventually I could do a whole paw at a time. Becareful not t0 cut too far. The more pleseant you make the experience, the better. In the end, You’ll have a dog who’ll stand quietly and let you do her feet. MUCH better than having t0 fight and hold the dog every single time

if the puppy is small enough, put it on your lap and cut them this way, look for the pink quick and then cut just below it, being careful not t0 cut the quick. IF the puppy isnt small, back him t0 a wall and clip the nails, if he doesnt like you messing with his nails, Or, have him lay down, if you can get him t0 stay, and cut them .
When your not cutting your dogs nails, mess with his feet, so he gets used t0 you doing whatever you want t0 his feet. I have mine trained t0 lay down and let me cut them, but it took a little while t0 get her t0 let me, but now it is worth it. She just lies there…Good Luck
